CENTRE FOR HEALTH AND NUTRITION PROMOTION |
|
The Centre for Health and Nutrition Promotion (CHANP) is a non- profit, non-governmental organisation, founded in March 1998 to promote the ideal of adequate nutrition in securing, enhancing and maintaining health, socio-economic productivity and development, and in improving the quality of life in general. This with the vision of a nation, and indeed a world, without malnutrition.
Our Vision: A healthy world free hunger and malnutrion.
Mission Statement: We are commissioned and mandated to contribute to the fight against hunger, malnutrition and poverty globally, mainstreaming food adn nutrition as our weapon; the health, wealth and sustainable development of people and nations - our goal.
BACKGROUND: Recent publications of both local and international agencies such as UNICEF, WHO, FAO, ACC/SCN, WABA, Micronutrient Initiative, FANTA and SARA of the Academy for Educational Development, Taskforce Sight and Life, FMOH and NGO's etc show dismal sobering statistics of the nutritional and health status of our women, children, the elderly etc. Globally, over three billion people suffer from micro-malnutrition. As a result, many go blind, some abort their babies and many more are mentally and physically retarded and at times die prematurely.
There are high maternal and infant morbidity and mortality rates, no thanks to poor nutrition, in-ter-alia. Exclusive breastfeeding and appropriate safe complimentary weaning foods are lacking. Bottlefeeding holds sway to the detriment of the infant child. HIV/AIDS is ravaging nations and victims and their dependants problems are compounded by hunger adn malnutrition. As in a vicious circle, HIV infection exacerbates malnutrition while malnutrition increases risk of infection and transmission.
OBJECTIVES: CHANP works towards:

| * Protecting and promoting exclusive breastfeeding and complementary feeding. |
| * Providing Nutritional Care and Support for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS |

| * Protecting and promoting the right to food. |
| * Ensuring safe water, sanitation, hygiene, environmental protection and food safety. |
