ON GOING PROJECTS IN WANGONET

Budgets are policy and moral documents that reflect the values and priorities of a family, church, organization, city, state, or nation. They tell us what is most important and valued to those making the budget. Examining those priorities reveal - who will benefit and who will suffer in the course of budget implementation. Just as we have “environmental impact studies” for public policies, it is time for a “poverty impact statement”, which would use the fundamental question of how policy proposals affect low-income people and the ordinary citizen.

Undertaking a “values audit” and or a “social impact audit” to determine how budget values and priorities square with those of the Nigerian people, and how implemented budgets impact upon their lives has become necessary. We believe that such an audit would reveal unacceptable priorities (or priorities that are at variance with those of the citizens), or priorities which implementation may fail. The cost of such failure is increasingly borne by the poor, whereas contractors benefit.

Budgets in Nigerian often scapegoat the poor and fatten the rich, ask for sacrifices mostly from those who can least afford it, stifle opportunities, and create comfort for the leadership. What the toolkit seeks to do is to aid the citizens and low-income people, (who should not be punished for decisions that placed the Nation on financial straits) understand budgeting processes, the impact of faulty budget implementation on social infrastructure and quality/standard of life, and provide knowledge on the possible intervention areas through advocacy. Granted, should the current national reforms place the nation on a desired growth path, what will be a useful corollary is to empower citizens with knowledge to make inputs into budget making.

The number games initiative or the corruption calculator project is a tool that will aid the calculation of the opportunity cost of corruption to Nigerian citizens. The calculator which will be embedded into the Anti-corruption Internet Database website (www.antigraft.org) will provide citizens with the opportunity of calculating the social and infrastructural deprivation arising from corruption. Using global development report such as Human Development Report, Corruption Perception Index etc. on Nigeria, the project will adopt international minimum benchmarks assessing performance.

THE MTN PARTNERS AGAINST AIDS IN THE COMMUNITY PROJECT

In May 2005 the MTN Foundation approved this project as one of the projects under the MTN Partnership against AIDS in the Community (MTN PAAC) program.

The main goal of the MTN PAAC is to achieve “information for behavioral change” in Nigerians especially with the HIV/AIDS scourge. The MTN PAAC aims at making as much information as possible available on HIV/AIDS to the public so they can make informed decisions about behavioral change, leading to reduction of HIV/AIDS menace in Nigeria.

The Interactive Touch Screen is designed to disseminate HIV/AIDS awareness information in the primary Nigerian languages (Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, Pidgin and English Language) to MTN customers across all segments of MTN target market.

CISCO NETWORKING ACADEMY

Under the WANGONeT CISCO Networking Academy, we seek to build the Information and Communications Technology capacity of individuals for the 21 st century workplace challenges. The Cisco Networking Academy program is a recognized blended e-learning model that integrates high-quality face-to-face teaching with the multimedia delivery of challenging curricula and embedded assessment over the Internet. The program has grown to more than 10,000 Academies in nearly 150 countries with a curriculum taught in 9 different languages. 17 of these Academies are located in Nigeria. WANGONeT is one of the most recent entries to this listing.
